Having been a
long time advocate of the "box" rule through our work on the successful
VG-Mount Gay 30, Van Gorkom Yacht Design have produced what is believed
will be will be a serious competitor in the 10.7 meter level-rating
band of the IRM Rule, the VG-IRM36. The hull lines are an extrapolation
on the race-proven VG-M30 producing a clean fast canoe body with a fine
entry forward for a strong windward performance, and a powerful planing
form in the after sections.
The construction
of the hull and deck consists of a wet-preg e-glass and kevlar laminate
over a foam core using an epoxy resin. Carbon fiber is used selectively
in areas of high loadings such as stringers, frames, and chainplates.
The rudder blade and stock are all carbon.
The cockpit is
long and open with ample room for crew to carry out maneuvers. The
competition fractional carbon rig, with swept back spreaders, will
carry runners and checkstays for greater control on sail shape. The
keel is our state-of-the-art, high-lift foil and dolphin bulb
configuration, which could be designed as a lifting keel. The keel and
rudder combination will contribute to a remarkably well-balanced boat.
The functional
interior has a very attractive and clean finish and is well attuned to
offshore sailing. Integral water ballast tanks give this design a full
range of stability and further add to the versatility and dynamics of
the boat. This system would allow the owner to race offshore with
reduced crew numbers, sail shorthanded, or just go cruising.
