The
new 156ft motor-sailer MITseaAH,
designed by Pedrick Yacht Design and Lebowitz & Pritchard and
built by Pendennis Shipyard, is probably one of the most unique and
technologically sophisticated super yachts afloat today. These unique
characteristics, not to mention her rich luxurious interior design and
out-fitting, give this distinctive looking aluminum motor-sailor the
very best of both worlds.
With the keel swung up and
rudders partially retracted, MITseaAH is ready to comfortably cruise at
25 knots powered by her two MAN/Paxman 3500 hp diesel engines. Want to
go sailing? Deploy the foils, extend the topmast, and with the push of
a button the sails are set and MITseaAH becomes a powerful sloop-rigged
sailing yacht.
Van Gorkom Yacht Design was contracted by PYD to assist in the task of
engineering the structures for this extremely complicated vessel. Our
responsibilities included the design of the keel trunk and hydraulic
cylinder support for the rotating fin and bulb, the engine foundation
grid, the mast step and chainplate system with -520 V1's, as well as
the critical mid-section of the yacht in way of the engine room and
main deck house. VGYD was also a key contributor to the conceptual
design of the retracting topmast.
All
the structures for MITseaAH were engineered in aluminum for ABS and MCA
approval. In addition, a detailed finite element analysis is being
conducted by Maricomp to verify the scantlings of many of the yachts
highly loaded structural elements.
