I would like to put forward a new way of thinking when it comes to the 30 foot, shorthanded racing sail boat. It’s an alternative concept to the regurgitation of the same stagnant, 30 year old design ideas that periodically burst onto the market and proclaim themselves to be the latest and greatest.

We now have the opportunity to utilize the incredible gains we’ve made in hydrodynamics and material science in the last ten years, and apply them to create a truly exciting class of 30 footers focused solely on the short-handed sailing enthusiast.

Having closely followed the amazing performances of the boats in the last Ocean Race, the design of the 2XS-30 is primarily influenced by the IMOC 60s, with influences from the Mini 6.5 Class and the Class 40s – only with a twist. Elements of this design will be technically sophisticated, yet with a rudimentary approach to simplicity and ease of handling.

With a focus on the extremes of offshore racing, the structure of the 2XS-30 has been engineered with an all carbon fiber hull, deck, internal structure and appendages. The hull design incorporates the latest proven trends in hydrodynamic efficiency, while the ergonomics of the deck arrangement features a partially enclosed cockpit and an open helming position.

The appendage package consists of retractable foils, an articulating fin and L-bulb, and twin rudders. The foil mechanism works in concert with the canting keel, producing lift and righting moment that propels the 2XS-30 into a quasi “airborne” state.

The spar is a carbon fiber, semi-freestanding mast with a carbon wishbone boom. The primary driver will be the powerful, square-top mainsail. A jib and a spreacher can also be rigged, which are supported by running backstays. All running rigging is led back to the cockpit for easy trimming.

Overall, the 2XS-30 will be an awesome 30 foot, offshore racing platform, optimized to give this shorthanded racing sail boat a significant advantage in terms of its raw power, its ease of handling, and its ability to perform well in a broad range of conditions.
